Ed Sheeran is expected to be the big winner at next month's Brit Awards after receiving more nominations than even Adele.

The Suffolk songwriter, whose song "The A Team" received 20 million YouTube views, earned four nominations, one more than Adele and Jessie J. But Sheeran has been called the leader of "the New Boring", a cultural movement which supposedly includes Adele and Coldplay.

The nominations reflect a year in which singer/songwriters have dominated the charts, at the expense of traditional guitar-based rock.

The British Female category is now the most competitive in the list. Last year's winner, Laura Marling, defends her crown against Florence and the Machine, Jessie J, Adele and Kate Bush.

Velvet Underground get legal with Apple over banana

The Velvet Underground, the band formed by Lou Reed and John Cale in the 60s, has taken legal action against the Andy Warhol Foundation for selling his iconic Banana album design to Apple.

The artwork was originally used on the 1967 album 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'.

The lawsuit this time claims the image is symbolic of the band and fans relate to the image as The Velvet Underground. They claim that by selling the image to Apple for iPad and iPhone products that the Andy Warhol Foundation is cheapening the name of The Velvet Underground and associating them with a product they would never endorse.

However, the artwork was never copyrighted because Andy Warhol originally licenced the image from an ad.

The album was a commercial failure in its day. It entered the Billboard chart in May 13, 1967 at no. 199 and was out by June 10, 1967 after only getting to no. 177. The group disbanded in 1973 and in years to come the album went on to become one of the most important records of its time.

Christmas shopping can feel like a stampede sometimes. Make sure that all of your most popular and
top selling items are easily visible and accessible in the store. By all means, play the classic
Christmas music to keep staff and customers in the mood, but try to mix it up with more modern music
to stop it becoming monotonous!

Christmas music shouldn't adhere to the same rules as Christmas merchansing. It is ok to have full on Christmas displays in November but full on 100% Christmas music can have a negative effect on both staff morale and productivity we suggest a gradual move into Christmas musically ensuring that 25% of your music being Christmas music means 1 in 4 tracks and not a full 15 mins every hour!

Use your music to build the Christmas promotion throughout November and December. One thing to remember is that Christmas music doesn't work after Christmas so make sure you have your exit plan in place!

The Movie Poster Gallery has announced a fascinating exhibition of original and rare music posters entitled “The Manchester Connection”, that exploded in the wake of the Sex Pistols’ legendary 1976 Free Trade Hall gig. The exhibition runs from 12th-25th November at the Movie Poster Art Gallery, 1 Colville Place, London, W1T 2BG.

The art exhibition highlights some of the great designs Factory commissioned from Peter Saville, Central Station Design, Ben Kelly and 8vo, along with the equally inspired design concepts of Morrissey for The Smiths, and the Stone Roses' guitarist John Squire.

Not content with sticking Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in Formula One cars every other weekend, Red Bull put 30 well known artists into pods on the London Eye last night as organisers hosted what they claim was the first ever festival in the sky.
2 Bears,MC Dynamite, Goldie and Scroobius Pip were all doing it.
Music producer and DJ Andy Weatherall, who was in one of the pods, said it would be hard to see the London Eye being taken over like this for another one off music event.
"One organisation couldn't pull off something like this every week, the months that must have gone into this," he said.
Essentially the whole of the London Eye was out of bounds for the public with each pod housing one different act for a select few.

In an industry first, fans will be able to tweet song requests to #TWEETBOX, which Jamie will pick up as he plays. As well as fulfilling as many requests as possible, Jamie will personally dedicate the song to the twitter users who have put his improvising skills to the test.

Imagesound and Jamie Cullum have collaborated in producing a soundtrack to run along with the event. Consisting of some of Jamies favourites and a fair chunk of his own material, it will run over the next six weeks in Pizza Expresses around the country.

The nominations for this year’s Mercury Prize have been announced in London today.

As predicted Adele and PJ Harvey were amongst those making the grade.

Those two acts are the bookies favourite at 4/1.

After the announcement there was a live performance by Anna Calvi and Gwilym Simcock, whose album, Good Days At Schloss Elmau was nominated.

Elbow, who were winners in 2008 have been nominated for a third time this year, Guy Gavey described the experience as hugely rewarding.

"There's nothing like it for raising your profile, and making you feel settled in your job, things like this allow you to relax a little bit."

Many critics will point to those acts which were left off the list - Wild Beasts and Arctic Monkeys being two of this year's big hitters that missed out.

The Mercury Prize is awarded to the year's best album by a British or Irish artist, as chosen by a panel of musicians, producers, and media representatives.

The final winner will be announced at the ceremony on Tuesday 6 September.

In a campaign designed by the seoul branch of advertising agency cheil, tesco homeplus supermarket opened last winter, a virtual grocery store in a south korea subway station, permitting users to shop using their smartphones.

A large, wall-length billboard was installed in the station, designed to look like a series of supermarket shelves and displaying images and prices of a range of common products. each sign also includes a QR code. Users scan the code of any product they would like to purchase, thereby adding it to their online shopping cart. After the web transaction is completed, the products are delivered to the user’s home within the day. The strategy makes productive use of commuters’ waiting time, while simultaneously saving shoppers time spent going to the supermarket.

The charity seeks to reflect Joe's unique contribution to the music world by offering support, resources and performance opportunities to artists who would not normally have access to them. In the run-up to Glastonbury - where the charity hosts an annual campfire each year - Strummerville have released a free compilation album featuring some of the bands playing around the Stummerville Campfire at Glastonbury this year.

Its not been a great year so far for losing music pioneers. We were just getting over the passing of the mighty Gil Scott Heron when the news came through this weekend that producer Martin Rushent had died aged 63.

Martin had worked everyone from Jerry Lee Lewis and Marc Bolan to Fleetwood Mac and The Stranglers.

Coldplay and Kaiser Chiefs release records today, at the same time as they get their first radio play.

The system, known as "On Air, On Sale", was introduced by two of the major record labels - Universal and Sony - in February.

The system has benefitted some artists - R&B singer Jessie J saw her first two singles jump straight into the top 10.

But, with sales spread over a longer period of time, it has also led to a few anomalies. Acts like Arctic Monkeys, Beyonce and even Lady Gaga have seen singles peak much lower than expected.

It's led to a schism in the music industry. Some artists have called for an end to On Air, On Sale, while others argue that the system needs time to settle in... and for all the major labels to sign up to it.

Thousands of music fans have flocked to the first ever Independent Label Market in Berwick Street. Early birds on Saturday (21 May) were able to pick up vinyl rarities and signed albums from the likes of Adele, White Stripes, St Etienne, Florence and the Machine and Arctic Monkeys. Market stalls were manned by bosses from 17 labels from around Europe, including Bella Union, Moshi Moshi and Soul jazz.

Artists including Jarvis Cocker and Alex Kapranos also turned up to support the event and meet fans.

LCD Soundsystem's last ever show

When LCD Soundsystem announced their final gig at New York's Madison Square Garden, tickets sold out in just 15 seconds.

Would-be concert-goers erupted in hysterical rage when touts began selling tickets priced as high as $1,500 (£930). The band's front man James Murphy tweeted: "NO MATTER WHAT WE DO, IT IS NOT WORTH THAT KIND OF MONEY TO SEE US!"

Evidently some 14,000 people thought it was. The atmosphere in the stadium on Saturday night was reportedly somewhere between joyous wake and dance party funeral – as the band announced on their website: "If it's a funeral, let's have the best funeral ever!!!" The stands were filled with people known as the hipsters, many were dressed in Murphy's trademark look (black suit, white shirt, skinny black tie), and all had come to pay their respects to the band that Esquire magazine described as "arguably the most influential indie band of the past five years."

Record numbers of British musicians will be arriving in Texas over the next few days for the start of the music industry showcase at South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin. Around 160 British songwriters and artists are expected to attend the 25^thanniversary of the event which starts in earnest today with the interactive element taking centre stage. From Tuesday roughly 2,000 acts will perform in 90 venues while there will be guerrilla-style unofficial shows around the city. The event will also see former White Stripes man Jack White launching his newest venture: a mobile record store dubbed Third Man Rolling Record Store.

Let me introduce you to Al Lewis and Sarah Howells one of our live artists at the year's Retail Week Conference 2011!

Al Lewis is a singer-songwriter from North Wales who now shares his time between Cardiff and London.

In 2009 Al released his first Welsh Language album, spending several weeks at number one in the Welsh Language album charts. In the same year a new EP (Skin & Bones) in collaboration with fellow Welsh compatriot, Paper Aeroplanes' Sarah Howells, was released.

With a sound reminiscent of the classic singer-songwriters of the 70's (Tim Buckley, James Taylor), but delivered with a modern twist akin to Bright Eyes & Sufjan Stephens, the big city is already holding much promise for the boy from Wales.

Al and Sarah are currently on tour at Caffe Nero, they are featured on the music channel at Caffe Nero daily in a regular Artist of the Month feature.

V Festival line up announced

Eminem and Arctic Monkeys are to headline this years V Festival with Primal Scream and Dizzee Rascal to top the second stage.
Other artists lined up for the festival which takes place at Chelmsford and Staffordshire on the 20th and 21st August include Tinie Tempah, Rihanna, Jessie J, Plan B, Kaiser Chiefs, The Script, Razorlight, The Courteeners, The Wombats, Ellie Goulding, N-Dubz and for those liking hard core The Saturdays!!

The organisers plan to make it a little more upmarket with ready built yurts and pop up hotel rooms for accomodation

Long Live The Classic Album

The album format has been under threat for some time now. Downloading and other forms of home entertainment means the album isn't as celebrated and enjoyed as it once was. However, thanks to a blog started by former Hacienda DJ Greg Wilson, up and down the country, groups of people have started gathering to listen back to classic albums in full.

By a combination of site visits, information relayed by the sales team and the reading of plans you will be able to accurately specify equipment to meet the client’s requirements. Your role will be end to end attending site meetings, briefing the installation team, overseeing the job, commissioning, programming and delivering training on completion as required.

The Project Manager will be required to attend meetings, with not just sub-contractors, but also with the client, where they will be the sole representative of the Company and its products.

Working under the remit of the Sales Director you will report directly to the Senior Project Manager.

All artists will say at one time or another they owe it all to their fans. In the case of My Major Company this is a truism, MMC is an online record label that uses web-based "crowd funding" to finance one of 10 acts it is promoting at anyone time. You can invest from £10 to £1000 and once the artist reaches £100,000 the finance can then be used for recording costsr. Any profits made from resultant music sales, tours and merchandising is split between artist company and investors on a 20/40/40 basis.

Shameless plug for some mates here. The Soundcarriers have had a rollercoaster last 12 months with a critically aclaimed 2nd LP 'Celeste', radio sessions for BBC 6 Music and Ratcliffe and Maconie on Radio 2, and now support slots on the Go Team tour which stops off in Nottingham this week. Keeping it local (ish), the band also featured in the John Smedley Times recently (right), showing some love for Derbyshires finest knitwear producers.

Here's a short peice of film showing how the band achieved the sound on the Lp, with the aid of some serious analogue kit and an empty warehouse (!?).

100 Club saved from closure.

A place for live music since 1942, last September's announcement that West End rock'n'roll omphalos the 100 Club was closing was grave indeed. And in December, it seemed the game really was up when a public campaign to buy it fell short of the £500,000 required. Even pleas by Macca, Mick Jagger and Beady Eye fell on deaf ears.

But the Converse shoe company - which, it should be remembered, has made special edition plimsolls featuring The Ramones, AC/DC, The Clash and Nirvana - has stepped up to keep it open, meaning that stretching ahead once more is a full programme of rock, jazz, punk and more (Sick On The Bus and Drongos For Europe play a double-header there on March 24!).

Radiohead 'The King of Limbs'

Radiohead will be unveiling its eighth studio album, The King of Limbs,' this week, and as they did in 2007, the band is planning on releasing it in a decidedly unique way.
On Valentine's Day, the band announced that their new full-length album will be released for download on Feb. 19 and in physical form on March 28, with an elaborately packaged "newspaper" version coming out on May 9.
Unlike in 2007, when the group allowed fans to pay any amount they wanted for 'In Rainbows,' Radiohead's new album will have a set price -- £6 for the digital version and £30 for the newspaper packaged set. On the album's official website, the group heralded 'Limbs' as (perhaps) the world's first "newspaper album." The packaged album includes two 10" vinyl records, a CD, large pieces of artwork, and 625 smaller pieces of art -- all of which will be held within a full-color piece of "oxo-degradable" plastic. One lucky owner of the digital version will also receive an autographed, two-track 12" vinyl record, though it's not clear what music will be included on the record.
Though some may interpret this release as a sign that Radiohead has "abandoned" the "pay what you want" model, band manager Chris Hufford said that the strategy simply represents a "logical progression" in the group's ongoing experiment with today's shifting corporate landscape.

While the band’s earlier releases were more of a pure folk-rock sound, “Kiss Each Other Clean” adds a wide variety of instruments and heavier studio production. While in some cases one may see this as selling out as a result of success, the reality is that Sam Beam and Iron & Wine are just growing and using their success to explore new places.

Music Matters is being supported at The Brits tonight

Music Matters is a collective formed by musicians and all those who work in and around music to ensure people are reminded of its enduring quality. The campaign aims to enable the tens and thousands of musicians in this country to dedicate their time to making music full time.

The Music Matters campaign is to introduce a trust mark to appear on all licensed music services. The mark will act as a guide for music fans, making it easier to find sites which have been fully licensed to distribute music.
