Yesterday marked the 10th
birthday of iTunes – that’s 10 years of revolutionising the music industry.
We’re in the decade of digital downloads and it’s getting harder to remember
the times when we popped CDs in the CD player to enjoy our favourite music. Going
back even further to the times of vinyl albums, well… they were doomed to
extinction.
That’s why we’re surprised to see the rebirth of vinyl! With sales rising from £1.1 million vinyl albums being sold in 2008 to £5.7 million in 2012, Indie music shops like Rough Trade in the East End of London are benefitting with the recurring popularity of vinyl.
Compilation albums were also thought to be be killed off by iTunes, Spotify and digital downloads. Yet they seem to be making a comeback; with sales having gone up to 20.6 million compilation albums being sold in 2012, up from 19.2 million the year before.
Despite the wealth of online choice, consumers seem to be rediscovering and appreciating a good vinyl album and a well-curated compilation album. Perhaps us music lovers are beginning to feel nostalgic…
