The high street
is not what it used to be and you may have heard that it’s dying off with the
rise of e-commerce. It is not surprising news that town centres have been struggling
for a while, recent victims including HMV and Jessops.
Well, the
high street is not quite dead yet, and seven communities in England are looking
to rejuvenate their high
streets by sharing £1 million of government cash on a series of initiatives
to achieve this goal. Rotherham won the top award of £268,058, for bringing in independent shop and
awards given by a panel of business groups went to Ipswich, Market Rasen,
Gloucester, Altrincham, Herne Hill in south London, and Southampton.
Grant
Shapps, former higher street minister… said that these pilots would be the
'vanguard of a high street revolution'. There's not much of a revolution taking
place if none of the projects that they proposed are happening."
We’re sure glad that there is still some investment in the high street, as they are important hubs for any local community!
